// Is this a joke?

Oh et c’etait au même endroit ? dans les mêmes conditions ? / it was at the same place ? same conditions ?

Hi All,
I have just found this link through the ‘News’ post on Emilie’s site.
IMy name is Jonathon Dow and I am photographer who took the images at AB Concert, Brussels, 23-11-09 for Emilie. I was appointed by Universal Music to do their official photographs. I had a ‘PhotoPass’ and was stood right at the front of the stage. I used a Canon EOS 5D mkII camera and Sigma 70-200mm f2.8 APO EX DG Macro HSM II Lens for all images, with a Canon EX430 flash on some images. The wide angled shots were from a Canon 28mm f2.8 lens. In answer to your question, yes it was the same show and the same conditions. Do you like the images? They are currently being reviewed by Universal for official uses. In answer to Nicolas’ question; No, this is not a joke.
Rod 29.11.09 | 16:20
Except one pictures, all you put were made with flash. The joke is here, in fact. Clean, technically perfect, but « here » on Le HibOO, play with flash is not really good live pictures.
Happy for you you are an official photographer, but I don’t like flash gig shot (except metal and hxc concerts with special effects, like long time sequence). Sorry :)

Also, I like some of the images on this link. I love the colour and black and white shots of the double bass player – the image with the Marshall Amp and the black vignette is wonderful, as is the 2nd from final image with the green lighting (keyboard player). All brilliant.
I did a write up review of the concert at this link:

Many thanks,

but i like how you write :)
Lolly 29.11.09 | 16:38
si j’ai bien compris Jonathon etait en face de la scene , mais pas kmeron si je me souviens bien puisqu’il etait deçu d’etre mal placé , c’est pour ça que je demandais si c’etait ds les memes conditions … pas bien grave en soi ;)
@Jonathon nice pics , really … but kmeron have some fans here ^^

Thank you Rod. Not all of the images were flash driven. In fact, the technical settings were as follows: Camera set to [2000 ISO with flash] [3200/6400 ISO without flash]. Shutter speed was 1/200th sec f2.8 at various 70-200 zoom settings. Flash set at -2.0EV and angled & diffused to very low levels to ensure stage lighting and colours intact. All wide angled stage photos were without flash as I could drive at 1/60th sec f2.8 without camera shake. Otherwise it was a bit dark to get as close in as I wanted. The ‘constant L series’ lens did a great job of giving a very shallow depth of field over Emilie’s eyes. I would have moved around a bit more during the show, but as there was no riot barrier, I was stuck to the one place. I think that ‘Marie Deschamps’ must be someone I spoke to, who was in the crowd. Not great that she put « saw some better images… » on her comment (no offence, Marie) but I prefer to remain impartial and respectful of all photographers images. It’s only fair, really. 8-)

… Also, please remember that I stumbled onto this L HibOO fourum by accident, while looking around Emilies News page.
I have just had a look around some of your own photo sites and they all look very nice. Are you all professionals or hobbyists? Or somewhere in-between? There are some fantastic images up there. Very good indeed. 8)
Rod 29.11.09 | 16:44
There are professionals AND hobbyists on Le HibOO. In my case, it’s professional. About Kmeron, hobbyist … but in all cases, like music and photography (the only difference is professional has money, the hobbyist not or few)
thank you so much.
Jonathon Dow 29.11.09 | 16:47
Thanks Lolly… That puts perspective on the situation.
(KMERON – I hope that you are OK with these forum entries..? Can I ask what sort of cameras you use? I have just had a look on your web site and I really like the ‘Lost in Dublin’ album. Super sharp, crisp and shallow depth of field make them all brilliant).
I am a Canon EOS 5D mkII user. I did look at the Nikon SLRs for a while, but having already got a lot of Canon lenses and flashes etc., It seemed silly to swap brands. The 5DmkII seems to review at 1.5 stops better in dark situations, so that is what I opted for. I can fully recommend this camera. A superb bit of kit.

Does anybod mind if I join this forum? I’d like to. Seems like a great place to swap ideas and get inspiration etc.
I also need to get a Flikr.com account activated too.
Rod 29.11.09 | 17:04
you’re welcome :)
Jonathon Dow 29.11.09 | 17:10
Super. You seem like a friendly bunch too. I’ll join in the next day or so and take a look around.
Many thanks,
Jonathon.

heya all :)
sry for the delay in the answer, went to paris, coming back, gigs in the meantime.. you know the drill :)
no harm done @jonathon Dow, no censorship either, i’m the 1st one to say that my pics are barely ok.. way too far, and as in 90% of the gigs in AB, no photo pit… arrived late.. or maybe hardcore fans i don’t know.. either way.. my 50mm and 2 huge fellas (and god knows im not really small) didn’t helped at all…
No worries about @Marie Descahmps thinking ur pics are better, probably true, when it comes to photos (art, moments, call it the way you like) it’s all subjective you know :) feel free to come in here, you’ll see there is some talented and nice people around, from paris or elsewhere, always just trying to be able to make people discover some new groups and stuff like that :D
Criticism is good and normal if I may say, that’s how u keep learning right?? :)
we’ll have a drink in another gig ahah, don’t worry, i’m harmless in the end :D (ur the guy that give is card to Pacovolume right?)
Jonathon Dow 30.11.09 | 20:11
Hi Kmeron, glad you remember me. You are right. I was the person who gave Paco Volume a business card after the shoot. I suppose I was at an advantage as I was let in before the concert opened as I was on the guest list and had an official photopass.
Definitely was an issue having no photo pit at AB… I had to stay where I was for most of the night. Stupidly, I started off dead centre on the stage front, where Paco Volume’s lead singer was. But when Emilie started, I had to move to the right a little as her microphone was in the way too much. As soon as I went to swap places with the group of girls next to me, this young boy went to dive into the gap! I had to explain that we were swapping places. He moved back and pulled a sad face – for the rest of the show! Poor lad! 8( <– him!
I'd be up for a drink at the next one, for sure.
The main reason I did Emilies photos was as a gift, to her. I am also a musician and had writers block for the last 7 years. I found out about Emilie 12 months ago and fell in love with her sound. En Cendres, Swimming, Le Veiel Amant, Sweet Blossom, Desert and The Ballad of The Big Machine, all being my favorites. Since then, I am writing music again, have learned to play the guitar fully, since Feb this year! I sing, play piano, drums and compose all sorts of music, from classical and jazz, to electro pop and acoustic. Below is a link to my MySpace.
So I thought, what better way to say thanks than to do a set of pro-photos of her first gig in Europe for the new album. 8-)

Hey, Just had a look thru your extended portfolio and saw the shot you took, with my Canon EOS 5D and big lens and flash in the shot… Nice!
